War Time Chocolate Cake

During wartime, the people back home didn’t always have the cooking supplies they would have liked. Recipes with little or no sugar, eggs, and milk were used so there would be more for the soldiers overseas. Some supplies were "rationed"—only so much per family. A family might have shared its sugar ration to make this No-Milk-No-Egg chocolate cake—mixed and baked in the same pan. Ask an adult to pre-heat the oven to 350 degrees F. In a 20 cm (8-inch) square pan put: 375 ml (1 ½ cups) all purpose flour 5 ml (1 teaspoon) of baking powder 250 ml (1 cup) of granulated sugar 2.5 ml (½ teaspoon) of cinnamon 5 ml (1 teaspoon) of baking soda 2.5 ml (½ teaspoon) of salt 45 ml (3 tablespoons) of cocoa powder (not instant cocoa drink mix) Add to the pan: 5 ml (1 teaspoon) of vanilla extract 15 ml (1 tablespoon) of white vinegar 75 ml (5 tablespoons) of vegetable oil 250 ml (1 cup) of lukewarm water Mix everything together with a fork and bake for 30 minutes or until done.

Please reinforce with your child the expectation at lunch time to sit and eat quietly and to leave the goofing around and playing for outside time. Wednesday

Today the students did some practical life activities. We made chocolate cake from a war time recipe and talked about rationing and what they would have had to do just to bake a cake. We also made home made ice cream the old fashioned way using a hand crank ice cream maker. The students helped with the parent appreciation tea at the school today as well. We ended the day watching the movie UP as it has intergenerational ties back to our time at KSV. Tomorrow we need to return all of our library books to the school so if your child has any library books or text books at home can you please make sure that you bring them in tomorrow. Tomorrow is also the science test on the digestive, respiratory and circulatory systems. If your child missed the test on Monday they will also write the skeletal and muscle test. Homework tonight: - home reading - study science - return library books Year 4 Social Studies models and all novel study memory boxes will also be sent home tomorrow. Have a good night!

Tuesday

It is so nice to be back! For those who were not aware I have had a very bad case of laryngitis over the last week and a half which is why I have been away. Not a lot of fun, but it was so great to be back working with the children today! Letters went home yesterday informing parents that the Eagle Bay trip has been cancelled. Please make sure you make sure that your child has given you BOTH letters as one came home from the teachers and another from the administration. As I have been away and we did not get as much classroom time at KSV as I originally had planned I am being somewhat flexible with the due dates in the classroom. The novel studies should be complete at this time and I will give the children until Friday to hand those in. The grade 4 students were supposed to have their SS projects in by Friday but I will give until Tuesday next week for those. Much of the time this week will be spent on work block times in the classroom. We had a great end to our time at Kamloops Seniors Village. We had a pizza party with the residents today and had our biggest turn out yet with 14 residents joining us! We had a few more come and join us for a picture and goodbyes. I have heard repeatedly over the past two weeks how wonderful and polite the children were. As we were leaving the building today we had many residents saying good bye in the hallway and I heard a few asking the kids to come back next year! Homework this weekend: - home reading - unfinished work: WITW and novel study - science respiratory package if not complete Have a wonderful weekend!!!

Thursday - KSV Day 7

Another wonderful day today. We had a great walk down to KSV this morning, it really is a great way to start the morning with the children. Once we arrived we had some time to work in the classroom. After recess we set up for a gym class outside and had relay races such as egg and spoon, balancing beanbags, crab walk and a water transfer from bucket to bucket. The children had a great time cheering each other on and we had a few residents watching us. After that we went back into the classroom and made some invitations for tomorrow. Tomorrow we plan on showing the movie Mary Poppins and have invited the seniors to join us as a fun culminating activity. KSV will be providing each child with a slice of pizza but they will still require their own lunch as well. I have told the children that they are also allowed to wear their PJ's tomorrow if they would like as a fun way to end our last day at the Village. Please keep in mind that we are still hoping to walk down to KSV in the morning (weather permitting) so if they choose to wear pyjamas that they are ones that they are able to walk in. Thank you again to all of the families for supporting this project. I know I have heard from a lot of the children who are sad that it is over and are already talking about how much they will miss them over the summer. Homework tonight: - home reading - unfinished work - district permission slips (for those going) Have a great night!

Those of us left at the school had a great day. We walked down to KSV (a 2.1 km walk by my count). After a small break for a snack we headed outside and helped do some weeding in the back flower beds. We then packed up and headed to Albert McGowan Park for a picnic with some residents. We had 8 join us for lunch today. After lunch and play time we headed down to the pond and did some bird watching and sketching. Thank you to those parents who drove today and made this outing possible for us all. Homework tonight: - home reading - unfinished work such as novel study to part G, WITW, science packages and maps. Thursday - KSV Day 4

What a wonderful end to our first week! We had a beautiful walk down to KSV this morning, I love watching the children pointing out the signs of nature they see during our walk. Once we arrived we worked in the classroom. One group then went up to the Bistro to receive a lesson on Maple Syrup from one of the residents while I took a group out for recess. We then switched groups. Both groups then got together and we discussed the tartan and its history (as the resident was from Nova Scotia and was wearing her tartan today). The children then had to design their own tartan explaining the meaning of the colours they picked. It was another wonderful lunch hour filled with bubbles, colouring and running races. After lunch we continued working on our tartans and went onto the patio and read more from "The War With Grandpa." We had a resident join us for our reading today! The bus back to the school today was a lot of fun as the driver stopped right in front of the school and let us off instead of walking from the bus stop. Homework tonight: - home reading - WITW if not complete - novel study part G if not complete A reminder that tomorrow is a Pro D day and Monday is Victoria Day. Have a great long weekend!

Tuesday - KSV Day 2

We stayed at the school for a portion of the morning this morning so that we could still have our band and fine arts switches. We decided that because the grade 6's were bringing their instruments down with them this morning that we would take the bus down. Once we arrived the grade 6's students played a few songs for the residents in the Bistro. We then had a work block in the classroom with some students at a time being pulled to bake sugar cookies with the residents in the Multipurpose Room. Most of the students had a chance to do this today. Those who didn't will be chosen first for resident activities tomorrow. After lunch we again went out to the back lawn area and had fun playing tag and again more bubble play. After our play time some students went to help with some service jobs around the Village and we read again from "The War with Grandpa" and then packed up to take the bus home. It was nice to see some new faces joining us for our activities this morning at the Village. Homework tonight: - home reading - novel study - science package - WITW map Have a great night!

We had a wonderful first day at KSV today. We walked down to the Village and it was a beautiful way to start the day. Once there we did a science lesson looking at how the enzymes in your saliva break down food. We were then invited to watch a choir. Once that was finished we helped put the tables and chairs back in their proper places in the dining room. We then headed outside to work on some sketching. Some of us got a little damp as they decided at that moment to check the sprinkler system ;) During lunch we had fun with bubbles and skipping ropes as well as other games. Some of the tenants came out to talk to us on our lunch hour which was nice. After lunch some of the children helped to tidy the patio and then we read from our read aloud "The War With Grandpa." Then we finished tidying up and headed over to catch the city bus back to the school. The children are getting much more comfortable there and were seen making conversation with many of the tenants. Tuesday

Today we had a very busy day. The children completed a mid year evaluation on themselves and their behaviour in the class/school. I will be sending these home this week for you to look at. On this sheet your child has also set goals that they would like to achieve for themselves for the remainder of the year. Today we also took part in a reading assessment where each of them read with me for a short period. These evaluations take up a large part of the day for the students and because of this, combined with the shortened week and the year 6's being gone for Thursday and Friday there will be no spelling this week. Homework tonight: - home reading - my podium pages - ss projects due this week Have a good night.
