The last Monday of the 2011 school year! It is also the start of a very busy week! Tomorrow we are off to the Art Gallery for the Emily Carr documentary. It was a busy day today. We decided that since the next week is going to be even busier that we will change some of the due dates. Today we celebrated Remembrance Day. We did some baking using a war time recipe. We also went to the assembly and had a moment of silence for those who are fighting, have fought and have given their lives. Today was also the second and final day of the Maple Leaf Math Challenge. Our school (our class being the only class taking part) is currently in 8th place in Canada. Congratulations to the students! I will post our final position on Monday. War Time Cake

War Time Cake
During wartime, the people back home didn’t always have the cooking supplies they would have liked. Recipes with little or no sugar, eggs, and milk were used so there would be more for the soldiers overseas. Some supplies were "rationed"—only so much per family. A family might have shared its sugar ration to make this No-Milk-No-Egg chocolate cake—mixed and baked in the same pan.

Ask an adult to pre-heat the oven to 350 degrees F.

In a 20 cm (8-inch) square pan put:

* 1 1/2 cups all purpose flour
* 1 teaspoon of baking powder
* 1 cup of granulated sugar
* 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon
* 1 teaspoon of baking soda
* 1/2 teaspoon of salt
* 3 tablespoons of cocoa powder (not instant cocoa drink mix)

Add to the pan:

* 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
* 1 tablespoon of white vinegar
* 5 tablespoons of vegetable oil
* 1 cup of lukewarm water

Mix everything together with a fork and bake for 30 minutes or until done.

Eagle Bay Notice

I have arranged a spot for our class at the Eagle Bay Camp at Shuswap Lake for three days (2 nights) from June 18-20. The children will be taking part in activities such as kayaking, basketball, climbing wall, paint ball, archery, and swimming. There is a cost for this opportunity and it will cost each child $200. This price includes all food, activities, accommodation and transport. I need to make a deposit to the camp soon, so I would ask each of you to make a $25 deposit to secure a spot for your child by November 21. Please make sure your payment is made and put securely in an envelope with your child’s name, my name and EAGLE BAY TRIP on the envelope and dropped into the secure box on the office counter to ensure any money sent in does not go missing. If you are writing a cheque please make it payable to Aberdeen Elementary. I would like the following payment plan for the remainder of the trip:

We started writing our Postcards for Peace today. A postcard sent to soldiers fighting in Afghanistan thanking them for their service. The Maple Leaf Math Challenge starts tomorrow on Mathletics and our class will be taking part. I will not be assigning homework for the next couple of nights so that the students will be able to spend extra time on Mathletics. It will rank us with other classrooms taking part across the country. Homework tonight:

Peach Muffin Recipe

Ingredients

* 3 cups all-purpose flour
* 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
* 1 teaspoon baking soda
* 1 teaspoon salt
* 1 1/4 cups vegetable oil
* 3 eggs, lightly beaten
* 2 cups white sugar
* 2 cups peeled, pitted, and chopped peaches

Directions

1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C). Lightly grease 16 muffin cups.
2. In a large bowl, mix the flour, cinnamon, baking soda, and salt. In a separate bowl, mix the oil, eggs, and sugar. Stir the oil mixture into the flour mixture just until moist. Fold in the peaches. Spoon into the prepared muffin cups.
3. Bake 25 minutes in the preheated oven, until a toothpick inserted in the center of a muffin comes out clean. Cool 10 minutes before turning out onto wire racks to cool completely.

Wednesday. Last day of the year.

Wow, what an emotional day. So sad to say goodbye to the Year 6's. I hope everyone has a great summer. Thank you for a fantastic year. See you in September!!!!

Tuesday

We had a good day today. We made sure that our tote trays and lockers were all cleaned out for the year before heading off to the pool for a fun afternoon of swimming! Remember that tomorrow is only a half day. The children are dismissed at 12:00. Have a good night!

Monday

Wow! We are in the last week! Where has the year gone? We are going on our last field trip of the year tomorrow. We will be going swimming at TCC. We will be leaving the school at 11:45 so the children will have an early lunch and then we are off. We will be back to school shortly before the end of the day bell. Please make sure that you have a swimsuit, towel and locker money.

Friday

We had a fantastic last Friday of the school year today at the Wildlife Park. We enjoyed the falcon and bear presentations and I think we all learned a lot. What a great way to finish our habitat study. Thank you to all of the parents who drove and spent the day with us at the park. At the band concert on Monday they are asking the students to bring a $2 donation as part of the Me to We fundraiser for Sierra Leone. We are also accepting donations again this year for part of project Nicaragua. They are asking for clothes, old bikes and any school supplies. Have a great weekend!

Thursday

The children just reminded me that this is the last Thursday that they will be in school this year. The year has gone so fast!!

We are off to the Wildlife Park tomorrow. Please make sure that your child is dressed for the weather with sunscreen, a water bottle and a hat. We will be walking for most of the day so please make sure you have comfortable shoes on. If the weather is nice I will allow them to play in the water park at the Wildlife Park if they have a bathing suit and a towel.

It was a busy day today. We talked about the Summer Solstice and National Aboriginal Day today. We are heading off to kayak tomorrow morning. Please make sure you have: sunscreen, bathing suit and dry clothes to change into, hat, water bottle, snack (I will bring hot dogs, juice box and chips for each child).

Due to some problems on the playground today I have decided to ban mini sticks for the boys in the classroom for the rest of the year. We had fun helping a primary class prepare for paper mache. Due to the ski trip and our year sixes being gone we had visitors in our class today. We enjoyed having them. :)

Friday

We had our first buddy class for 2011 today. It was a lot of fun making paper snowmen with our little buddies. Our school did a wonderful job raising money for Haiti with over $1300 being raised. Congratulations Aberdeen!!!!

Thursday

The grade fours logged on to the practice FSA's today. There is a link on the school website that they can use if they want to continue to practice. Tomorrow is hat day. If you brought coins in for the jar and wear your pin, then you are able to wear a hat all day tomorrow. Tomorrow is also hot dog day for those who ordered. Homework tonight:

The grade 4's played their first basketball game in gym today. Lots of fun! Three of our students won for math problem of the week last week out of six. Can anyone tell me that fraction? Homework tonight:

We looked at home made slides using the microscope today. We looked at a student's cheek cell and algae from the fish tank. A busy day to end a busy week! The students went around to all the classes and gave MS presentations today. The Read-A-Thon starts Monday, get your books together to start reading!
