Thank you to all of the students for bringing inside/outside shoes today! It was great to see everyone with proper footwear. Also thank you to our students for their patience with the little ones today. They boot room can be a crazy place with 70 children coming in and they were patient to make sure that no one got stepped on today. A reminder to them to come into the boot room, remove your boots, place them on the shelves and put your shoes on once you are in the hallway or classroom. Thank you as well to the parents for removing your boots and shoes when entering out school. This keeps our hallways drier and safer for those walking in socks and for preventing slips and falls. Please ensure that your child has a change of clothes in a plastic bag in their locker for those days when things do get wet. Homework tonight: - home reading - study spelling - gym strip - socks/pants - snowpants and winter clothing Have a good night!

War Time Chocolate Cake

During wartime, the people back home didn’t always have the cooking supplies they would have liked. Recipes with little or no sugar, eggs, and milk were used so there would be more for the soldiers overseas. Some supplies were "rationed"—only so much per family. A family might have shared its sugar ration to make this No-Milk-No-Egg chocolate cake—mixed and baked in the same pan. Ask an adult to pre-heat the oven to 350 degrees F. In a 20 cm (8-inch) square pan put: 375 ml (1 ½ cups) all purpose flour 5 ml (1 teaspoon) of baking powder 250 ml (1 cup) of granulated sugar 2.5 ml (½ teaspoon) of cinnamon 5 ml (1 teaspoon) of baking soda 2.5 ml (½ teaspoon) of salt 45 ml (3 tablespoons) of cocoa powder (not instant cocoa drink mix) Add to the pan: 5 ml (1 teaspoon) of vanilla extract 15 ml (1 tablespoon) of white vinegar 75 ml (5 tablespoons) of vegetable oil 250 ml (1 cup) of lukewarm water Mix everything together with a fork and bake for 30 minutes or until done.

Friday

Today the children wrote their unit test on Sound. We will be looking at Light for our next unit. We also did some baking in the class today. We made Chocolate Cake using a recipe from Veterans Affairs Canada. We discussed how during war times food was rationed and people did not always have the ingredients we use today. This cake contained no dairy and no eggs. I will post the recipe in another post. Homework this weekend: - home reading (I have not received book reviews from some students yet this year. If your child is reading please remind them to complete a book review page when they have completed a book) - ancient civilization paragraphs will be due Wednesday if they have not already been handed in - Remembrance package if not completed Have a wonderful weekend.

Song Lyrics for Remembrance Day

Dona Nobis Pacem Dona Nobis pacem pacem Dona Nobis pacem (repeated 3 times) Build Me A World Build me a world where there's hope for children to grow with no poverty no hatred or war. Build me a world where there's room to movie in with wide open scenery and clear skies above. I'll----climb the mountains and look out over the sea I'll----build the bridges connecting people to me. Build me a world where there's no more sickness We share all our promises, the rich and the poor I'll build this world if you'll stand beside me... Give me hope, give me faith, give me love. I'll climb the mountains and look out over the sea I'll build the bridges connecting people to me. Build me a world where there's no more sickness We share all our promises the rich and the poor. I'll build a world if you'll stand beside me... Give me hope, give me faith, give me love.
