Carrot Cookies

Carrot Cookies (makes around 6 cookies)

Ingredients

Cream the margarine and the sugar together with the vanilla essence.
Beat in the grated carrot.
Fold in the flour. If mixture very dry then add a little water.
Drop spoonfuls onto greased tray and press down just a little.

We did our first cooking activity today. We made carrot cookies from a wartime recipe. The children really seemed to enjoy them. For homework this weekend I asked the children to think about what they had coming up that was due, so some may be bringing home more than others. Enjoy the rest of your weekend!

Friday October 29

What a fun day today. First off a big thank you to the two moms who came in to help with painting today. It was nice to have a couple of extra sets of hands in the classroom. We had fun painting pumpkins and turning them into Montessori globes. Unfortunately the paint started to peel off some by the end of the day. I told the children that the positive side of that was that since they were real pumpkins they would have to be thrown away in a few days anyways.
Homework this weekend:

- home reading
- unfinished work
- Stay Safe on Halloween
- French quiz Monday

We also have our first YPC on Monday next week. Have a great weekend!!!

Research Information

A few parents have written to me in the last little bit on the topic of research. The students all have assignments on the go right now that require some research. I have told the students many times that the first source for this is World Book online. This site has much of the information that they require for these assignments. Please make sure that you have checked with your child if they have used World Book before they are off looking for other sites. They can access this from home by going through our school site and going in to the library links. They have the user name and password in their agendas, handwritten in on the first page. If they need help with other sites and you cannot help them or do not know where to start, please let me know and I can give them some sites. Thanks!

Crazy Monday!

What a crazy day it was today!!! We have a set schedule in place now and it started this morning, so first thing at 8:30 this morning the children were off running to band and fine arts, I don't think we stopped after that! I did not have a chance to help some students run off projects today, but not to worry I will do so tomorrow. We had a nice talk today about some things about school that are making us anxious. I let them know that they are all doing a WONDERFUL job getting settled into the school year and that if they are worried about something that coming and talking with me can usually settle the problem. Homework tonight:

- home reading (we went to the library to sign out books today - we have one library time booked so far - on Mondays, but I would rather use this block for research with Ms. Carter so I am going to try to book another day for book exchanges - perhaps Thursday???).

- Health

Schedule update:
- band/fine arts - first thing Monday and Thursday morning
- P.E. - Monday and Thursday afternoon

Items for next year

I just thought that I would post this while I am thinking of things now. Throughout the summer if you see any of these things during your travels (garage sales or have them at home and are looking to get rid of them) our class would greatly appreciate them. If you can donate them could you please post a response on here so that others know as well, or let me know and I can update the list.

- boggle game
- scrabble game
- old blender or food processor (I want to do some paper making next year. The blades don't need to be sharp, it just has to blend wet paper)
- set of mixing bowls

Eagle Bay Information

Information on the Montessori 4/5/6 Eagle Bay Trip

Dear Parents:

Here are a few points to keep in mind about our trip to Eagle Bay on Monday.

1.We ask that no parents come out to the camp unless you have been organized as an overnight chaperone. You can appreciate how difficult it will be for camp staff to have unexpected parents show up at the camp. All events are run by camp counsellors, and thus, parent assistance beyond what we have asked for is not necessary.

2.Dress code: Please be reminded that this is a school district function, and as a result, dress code expectations still apply. With that being said, we would like to ask the children to refrain from wearing spaghetti strapped tops.

3.On Monday May 31st the students will arrive at the school at the regular time. They can drop their supplies in their classrooms (clearly marked with their name on everything) and will attend class until around 10:00. We ask that any parent chaperone be at the school for a meeting by 9:15 am. On June 2nd, students will return to the school around 12:00pm and then will be dismissed to go home. Please arrange for someone to be at the school to pick up you son or daughter.

4.School Rules: Again, as this is a school function, proper behaviour is expected and those who do not abide by the school rules will be dealt with accordingly. Students are expected to respect and obey not only the teachers, but the camp counsellors and parent helpers.

5.Emergency Contact: If parents need to contact their child, please call the camp office @ 250-675-2122

6.If your child requires specific medication to be administered while he/she is at the camp, please have it, in its original container if possible, clearly marked with instructions and your son or daughter's name. All medication will be kept in the possession of the teachers and given out accordingly. You also need to make sure you fill out a form at the office giving us permission to distribute medication to your child if you have not already done so this year.

Thank you for taking the time to read this information. We know that we will all have a wonderful time during our visit to Eagle Bay.

Wednesday

As some children still have assignments that are now going on 3-4 weeks late, I have decided that any homework not completed will result in an email sent home to notify parents. We are getting into the busiest time of the year and not completing homework and handing assignments in on time is holding up the class. Please talk with your child and find out if they have any assignments that they have not handed in.

Homework tonight:

- home reading
- Write Traits lesson 17 (and 16 for those who have not finished it from yesterday)
- Math Year 6 has a test tomorrow
- Novel Study due tomorrow (they have known about this due date for 2 weeks)

Have a good night.

Tuesday, May 25, 2010

Tuesday May 25, 2010

It's the end of May already? Where has the year gone? It will be a busy couple of weeks. Many of the students were gone to the zone track meet today, I hope they all had a good time and tried their best. Eagle Bay is also coming up on Monday, there will be some more information sent home this week about that. Homework tonight:

- home reading
- Write Traits 16
- Math
- Novel Study

There will be no spelling for two weeks as there were so many away today, and with Eagle Bay next week it will be a short week.

Again, I would like to mention the lack of homework being done. Many children are getting behind in assignments, please make sure your child has his/her homework completed every night, this time of year it is very important not to fall behind!

- home reading
- study spelling
- math
- novel study
- spelling sheet
- energy homework

Many of the students are not doing their homework every night. It is getting to a point where I am no longer going to accept late assignments without valid reasons. Some students still have work outstanding that is a couple of weeks late. And today, half of the class did not get their homework completed last night. The students are given ample class time to do homework and should need no more than one hour to do any work that may be needed to be brought home. If your child seems to be bringing a lot of work home, perhaps you need to have a discussion about proper usage of class time. Have a good night!

Tuesday, May 4, 2010

Fiesta Friday!

What a fun day today was. We had a BLAST making our Mexican lunch today. I love hearing comments like some of the ones I heard today, "Who knew vegetables could taste so good," and "Food tastes so much better when you cook it yourself." All these little chefs in the making! I hope you are taking advantage of the cooking skills that they are learning here at home! I am so happy that they are willing to try new things to eat and that most do it with an open mind. Homework this weekend:

- home reading
- study for math test Monday

Have a great weekend, see some of you on Sunday for Boogie!

Tuesday, April 27, 2010

Tuesday April 27

What a busy day, it seems like the days are going faster and faster the closer to the end of the year we get. Perhaps it is just because we are so busy? Hmmm. . . To add to the chaos we are going to cook again this week! We are having a Fiesta Friday with some homemade tacos and salsa this week. The children should be bringing their ingredient list home tonight, if for any reason you are unable to pick up the food, please just let me know and I can pick it up. They will need to make sure that they have a plate, fork or spoon and a cup this week (I will be providing a surprise drink and dessert). Homework today:

Hoppy Easter!

We had a really nice day to end the week. What an amazing day!!! We had a fantastic time at the Emily Carr and Jack Shadbolt exhibit today. The children did some amazing artwork. It was not all dry by the time we were ready to go, so I will pick it up this weekend, and then display some of it at school before I send it home. No major homework for the weekend, home reading and working on their science fair projects. Have a fantastic weekend!

Happy Friday!

It was both a great, yet sad day today. We had a fantastic day celebrating the final day of one of the students in our class. We wish him nothing but the best as his family moves back to Saskatchewan. We had so much fun making our own pizza's today. Rolling out the dough was a lot of fun and as one student student said "it feels like memory foam!" I was very impressed that all of the children tried something new on their pizza's today, many vegetables were eaten. I was very proud! Not much homework for the weekend - home reading and we are going to have a couple of hours of work time on Monday to work on our Egg Drop projects so they need to bring materials in to work on that. I hope you all have a great weekend.

Friday

Well the FSA's are done! Only those children who have missed one will have to write them next week. It was a bit of a crazy afternoon today, I had to leave suddenly due to a complication with my father at the hospital. I know that my quick departure worried some of the children, but I just want to let everyone know that he is doing okay now. Sorry if I scared you guys!!! But I hear that you were really good for Mr. Lloyd.

The only homework that I would like them to do this weekend is their home reading. Have a great weekend everyone and I will see you on Monday morning!

Year 4 FSA note

I have been reviewing a lot of math topics in a very short time period over the last couple of weeks. We will be covering these topics in MUCH greater detail later in the year. I just wanted the students to be comfortable and remember the math language that could be used on their FSA's next week. For instance today I mentioned perimeter and got six blank stares until I reminded them that this is measuring the outside of something and instantly they were all telling me that they knew how to do this, they just forgot what it was called. These assignments should not be causing any stress or concern, if they are please let me know right away. Thank you!!!

Monday Jan. 11

What a great start to the week. The children all worked really hard today. They were given a new independent science assignment today that they have until Feb. 12 to complete. Most of this work will be completed in class, although the final project will have to be worked on at home too. I think it is going to be a fun one, have your child tell you about it!

This week they all have the same spelling list to get them used to using the vocabulary that they will see with their science projects over the coming weeks. The words are: crank, effort, pulley, force, friction, fulcrum, gear, gravity, inertia, incline, kinetic, lever, linear, load, oscillating, potential, screw, wedge, axle, reciprocating.

Homework tonight:
  • Home reading
  • Study spelling
  • Yr. 4 Math worksheets
  • Extra clothes for tomorrow - they are going sledding for gym and are bound to get wet in these conditions!
  • Comment on the blog! At some point this week I would like all children to leave a comment so that I know people are checking in!
Have a great night!

What a wonderful way to end the week. The students were so focused on their work today, they were very surprised at how much they could get done when they were not chatting with a friend! Not too much homework for the weekend. Home reading for all and a small math package for the year fours (due Monday).

We had a fantastic time sledding and playing in the snow this afternoon. A perfect way to end the week. Have a great weekend!
