Thank you to all of the students for bringing inside/outside shoes today! It was great to see everyone with proper footwear. Also thank you to our students for their patience with the little ones today. They boot room can be a crazy place with 70 children coming in and they were patient to make sure that no one got stepped on today. A reminder to them to come into the boot room, remove your boots, place them on the shelves and put your shoes on once you are in the hallway or classroom. Thank you as well to the parents for removing your boots and shoes when entering out school. This keeps our hallways drier and safer for those walking in socks and for preventing slips and falls. Please ensure that your child has a change of clothes in a plastic bag in their locker for those days when things do get wet. Homework tonight:
- home reading

War Time Chocolate Cake
During wartime, the people back home didn’t always have the cooking supplies they would have liked. Recipes with little or no sugar, eggs, and milk were used so there would be more for the soldiers overseas. Some supplies were "rationed"—only so much per family. A family might have shared its sugar ration to make this No-Milk-No-Egg chocolate cake—mixed and baked in the same pan.
Ask an adult to pre-heat the oven to 350 degrees F.
In a 20 cm (8-inch) square pan put:
375 ml (1 ½ cups) all purpose flour
5 ml (1 teaspoon) of baking powder
250 ml (1 cup) of granulated sugar
2.5 ml (½ teaspoon) of cinnamon
5 ml (1 teaspoon) of baking soda
2.5 ml (½ teaspoon) of salt
45 ml (3 tablespoons) of cocoa powder (not instant cocoa drink mix)
Add to the pan:
5 ml (1 teaspoon) of vanilla extract
15 ml (1 tablespoon) of white vinegar
75 ml (5 tablespoons) of vegetable oil
250 ml (1 cup) of lukewarm water
Mix everything together with a fork and bake for 30 minutes or until done.
Friday
Today the children wrote their unit test on Sound. We will be looking at Light for our next unit. We also did some baking in the class today. We made Chocolate Cake using a recipe from Veterans Affairs Canada. We discussed how during war times food was rationed and people did not always have the ingredients we use today. This cake contained no dairy and no eggs. I will post the recipe in another post. Homework this weekend:
- home reading (I have not received book reviews from some students yet this year. If your child is reading please remind them to complete a book review page when they have completed a book)
- ancient civilization paragraphs will be due Wednesday if they have not already been handed in

Song Lyrics for Remembrance Day
Dona Nobis Pacem
Dona Nobis pacem pacem
Dona Nobis pacem
(repeated 3 times)
Build Me A World
Build me a world where there's hope for children
to grow with no poverty no hatred or war.
Build me a world where there's room to movie in
with wide open scenery and clear skies above.
I'll----climb the mountains and look out over the sea
I'll----build the bridges connecting people to me.
Build me a world where there's no more sickness
We share all our promises, the rich and the poor
I'll build this world if you'll stand beside me...
Give me hope, give me faith, give me love.
I'll climb the mountains and look out over the sea
I'll build the bridges connecting people to me.
Build me a world where there's no more sickness
We share all our promises the rich and the poor.
I'll build a world if you'll stand beside me...
Give me hope, give me faith, give me love.

Sorry that I have not posted on here much this week. It has been busy with interviews. We have had a wonderful week in the classroom. We had a great time at the Harvest Lunch on Wednesday. It was fun to have all 400 students in the gym having lunch together. We made "turkey callers" in the classroom this morning and then again with our little buddies in the afternoon. Please ask your child to explain the science of this to you. The children only have homework if they have any outstanding assignments such as spelling, grammar, timelines. Also, remind the children that they have a rhythm test Tuesday. Have a wonderful long weekend. A reminder that there is no school Monday for the Thanksgiving holiday.

Sorry that there was no post yesterday. I have just posted this weeks spelling words as well if you need them. This morning the children went into the computer lab with Ms. Carter for the first time. The year 4 students were introduced to World Book which they will be using a lot in the coming months (and years) for research in the classroom. There have been some changes made to the website so it was new for the 5/6s's today as well. We are still continuing to try to work quietly in the classroom. With 29 students when they get off task the noise level can rise quickly. Please remind your child that work time in the classroom should be used for just that. A reminder that if students are bringing a drink into the classroom that it should be water only. Homework tonight:
- home reading
- study spelling
- early dismissal tomorrow at 12:30

Today I was able to have each of the children read me a short passage. Please make sure that your child is doing his/her nightly reading. A couple of times a week I encourage him/her to do oral reading. This does not mean reading out loud for the whole 30 minutes, even doing just a page. This helps them with fluency and reading with expression. We had our first library sign out today. Each child should be coming home with home reading books this evening. Please remember that there is no school for students tomorrow. Homework tonight:

Today we celebrated the International Day of Peace. All of the Montessori classes got together by the garden and asked for peace throughout the world. We concluded by all singing "Last Night I Had the Strangest Dream." In the afternoon we did some role playing while talking about being assertive. We learned how to speak in an assertive way. The children really enjoyed taking part in the role plays. We also started discussing time lines. I have asked the children to each create their own time line of their life. Part of their homework tonight is to talk to their families about some milestones or important events that have happened to them throughout their lives. A reminder of the Open House at the school tonight from 6-7 followed by a PAC meeting at 7pm. Homework tonight:

We finished off the week meeting our buddies for the first time today. The children were WONDERFUL big buddies to their new Kindergarten buddies. I heard great feedback from the other teacher about how positive an experience it was for the little ones. There is a lot of information coming home with your child tonight. Please take a few minutes and fill out the survey on the website stated in the classroom newsletter. The home reading list for the year is also coming home for you to see today. All of these books are available in our school library. Our first library day is Thursday next week. Until that point any book that they may have at home that they could read nightly will be great. Have a wonderful weekend!

Another wonderful day in the classroom today. The grade fours are continuing to settle in, but I am pleased to see that they are checking in with me or other students for clarification when required. They had their first music class with Mrs. Sewell today. We have also started working with the virtue of assertiveness. We will continue to discuss this over the next couple of weeks. There is no homework tonight other than continuing to study for Friday's spelling dictation. Have a wonderful evening.

Stuffed Peppers....sorry I didn't post it sooner!
Ingredients
18-20 baby bell peppers, cleaned
1/2 cup Finely Shredded Asiago & Parmesan Cheese (I used cheddar instead of asiago for the kids)
1/2 cup Cream Cheese
1/4 cup breadcrumbs
1 large egg
1/2 tsp oil
1 tsp kosher salt
1 dash black pepper (I did not add this as some kids do not like pepper)
3 tbsps fresh parsley, chopped (I did not add this as some kids don't like it)
Directions
Preheat oven to 425° F.
Cut each pepper lengthwise and remove stems with a paring knife. Scoop out seeds and ribs, leaving the pepper hollow.
In a mixing bowl, combine the shredded Asiago & Parmesan and cream cheese, chopped parsley, breadcrumbs and eggs, and mix well.
Stuff a generous amount of filling into each pepper, leaving about ¼-inch space at the opening of the pepper.
Coat peppers on the outside with oil, salt and pepper.
Place on sheet tray and roast for 5-7 minutes, or until peppers are soft. Make sure to not over cook them, as cheese will melt out of the pepper.

What a beautiful day today was. After being out on supervision at recess today I noticed (as did a few others in the room) that there was a lot of garbage on our school yard after the snow had melted. Thank you to the students in the class for helping to keep our school yard looking clean. Homework tonight:

Friday
The children all did a wonderful job presenting in class today. They all spoke clearly and confidently. We went down to our buddy class this afternoon. We were invited down to celebrate Valentine's Day. The children in our class were wonderful and patient with the younger ones making sure that they achieved success in all of the games that they took part in. I was very proud of their behaviour with our little buddies today. Today, due to many problems that have been happening lately, we have had to ask the children to take a one week break from playing football at school. The play has been much too rough lately, whether intentional or not, so we have asked that for next week no footballs come to the school. A reminder that next week is a shortened one. Wednesday is a half day (dismissal at 12:30) for interviews and Friday is a ProD day. Homework this weekend:
- home reading
- ss projects if not complete
- science quiz Monday
Have a great weekend!

We had a lot of fun this morning in a Play is the Way presentation. The children learned how to play games that required them to work together and encourage each other. Tomorrow they will present their social studies projects to each other. Due to technical difficulties I told them that they will have time tomorrow morning to print their projects (if required in grade 5 and 6). Due to this and the invitation of helping our little buddies with some Valentine's crafts tomorrow afternoon I am going to postpone the science quiz on chapter 9 (salmon, forests, water and renewable energy resources) until Monday.
